On Nov. 16th, 2010, the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust and the Clayoquot Forest Communities Program hosted 51 people for an Integrated Monitoring Workshop in Tofino BC. This meeting was intended to bring local people and organizations together and outline steps towards an integrated monitoring program in the region. Presentations were made by the Saya Masso and Joe Martin of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, Terry Dorward of the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks initiative, Mike Davis with the Clayoquot Forest Communities Program, Dionne Bunsha, Dr. Barb Beasley, Dr. Laura Laucks of Ecotrust Canada and Westcoast Aquatic, Dr. Tom Okey of Westcoast Aquatic, and Dr. Karen Price of the Babine Watershed Monitoring Trust. Local facilitator John Rampanen, an Ahousaht member, also led the group in a discussion on next steps in working towards an integrated monitoring program.

The 1995 the Clayoquot Sound Science Panel Report outlined monitoring and adaptive management as a vital part of their recommendations for sustainable ecosystem-management. Since then there has been a number of attempts at developing a monitoring program in the region. It has recently been identified that a partnership approach may be the way to move forward with this. A partnership will allow us to leverage funding, share resources, and take a whole-system approach that includes terrestrial, marine, and social dynamics. It has been recognized that a Clayoquot specific program should be locally administered, centrally located, and accountable to all Clayoquot communities. It should also be able to operate on fluctuating amounts of funding by prioritizing efforts based on risk and uncertainty.
The Clayoquot Forest Communities Program – a partnership between the Central Region Chiefs and Ecotrust Canada – has been working to develop and support a monitoring program in the region for the past three years alongside a number of local partners. These partners include the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, who will now be playing a leading role in the development of this program and partnership agreement.
