Nuu-chah-nulth Central Region Governance Structures
This report provides the first comprehensive description of the Aboriginal system of government on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
It is intended as an information guide for government, business, nonprofit groups and others interested in understanding how to engage the nations of Hesquiaht, Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Yuu-tluth-aht (Ucluelet) and Toquaht.
Ecotrust Canada is not aware of any other information source that begins to make the governing structures of these five First Nations communities so readily accessible. We believe that the work is important to support respectful communications and effective multi-party decision-making within the region.
We encourage organizations, institutions, government agencies and businesses to refer to this report for guidance when they are considering their approach to consultation with these Nations. At the same time, nothing in the report is meant to define or diminish the aboriginal rights and titles of the First Nations; nor is it intended to be used in a court of law or in a treaty negotiation process.
Ecotrust Canada has learned a tremendous amount from the local First Nations researchers who helped to write this report and we are grateful for the lessons learned from our First Nations friends and colleagues. We learned that the governance structures in First Nations are not only alive and vibrant, but also that they have much to teach us.
This report is a work in progress in that the First Nations’ governance structures are dynamic and will continue to evolve. In order to ensure that the report’s information remains timely and accurate as elections are held, treaties ratified, and communities adapt to a changing world, we have posted many of the report's chapters onto Wikipedia, the online collaborative encyclopaedia. First Nations members and the public are encouraged to update the information themselves. The following links will take you to various Wikipedia entries:
