Just days after announcing a run-of-the-river power proposal will go through a comprehensive environmental review, the federal government will now provide funding to First Nations which want to buy into renewable hydro projects in B.C.
Last week, federal environment minister Jim Prentice verified that a potentially huge run-of-the-river hydroelectric project in Bute Inlet will be scrutinized later this year by the public and a federal environmental review panel.
The hydro proposal lies in the heart of the traditional territory of the Homalco First Nation, which is now based in Campbell River. The project proponents, Plutonic Power, and the band are presently in negotiations.
