Ecotrust Canada would like to congratulate Dennis Sampson, a member of the the Lax Kwa’alaams Band in Northern B.C., on receiving his Fishmaster IV certification.

Dennis received funding through his Band and PICFI to attend an eight-week marine training programme coordinated by Ecotrust Canada staff, that would provide him with the Transport Canada certification required by law to operate any large fishing vessels over 15 tons. Just yesterday, Dennis was able to challenge his final oral examinations for the Fishmaster IV certification and he passed!

Dennis has many years of experience fishing in the Area A crab and north coast salmon gillnet fisheries and can now look forward to piloting one of the fishing boats that he has worked on as crew. He is also looking forward to owning his own boat and operating a successful fishing business in the north; we hope to work with him again in the future as he continues to be a part of keeping the coastal community small fisheries business vibrant.
