Clayoquot Focus
In 1995, Ecotrust Canada published its first report, 'Inviting the Salmon Home', with the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, on restoring sockeye salmon to the Kennedy Lake in Clayoquot Sound. Since then, our work with West Coast communities has grown to touch almost every sector—tourism, forestry, fisheries, shellfish farming, small business finance, energy, economic development and planning.
In 2008, we were excited to announce new strategic investments in Clayoquot Sound. We opened a new harbour-front office in a former fish plant, hired new staff and launched the Clayoquot Forest Communities Program in partnership with the Nuu-chah-nulth Central Region Management Board.
Our program in Clayoquot Sound continues to develop as we help communities to both green and grow their local economy.
Currently, forestry in British Columbia is largely about the timber that can be harvested, with most forest lands managed with only the economy in mind — the dollar value of the timber market.
