A second wind for old-growth wood SecondWind-480.jpgA war-time airplane hangar. A turn-of-the-century sawmill on the Fraser River. A cannery in Prince Rupert’s historic Cow Bay. Chris Kieswetter sees more than old industrial buildings slated for demolition: he sees the potential to salvage and re-use the old growth timber into value-added flooring, doors and furniture. “I’ve always had a passion for sustainability,” says Kieswetter, who started Second Wind Timber in 2001. “I came into the business from salvaging old growth timber and wanted to get into the value-added side instead of just exporting the raw timber.” The company has two full-time employees and a highly trained craftsman. With a loan from Ecotrust Canada Capital, Second Wind Timber was able to ensure a steady supply of salvaged timber for its growing product line. | |
