The world's two dominant eco-forestry certification bodies, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), are duking it out over which is the best standard for responsible forestry.

SFI is backed by industry and FSC by environmentalists. The latter has launched a campaign for Credible Forest Certification that accuses SFI of condoning "environmentally harmful practices including large-scale clearcutting and chemical use, logging of old growth and endangered forests, and replacement of forests by ecologically degraded tree plantations."

Ecotrust Canada has chosen FSC as its preferred certification and has worked for years on helping small- and medium-sized forestry and chain-of-custody operators in BC to become FSC certified.

TheTyee.ca does a pretty good job of outlining many of the differences between the two standards. So far, it appears that FSC is winning the battle: FSC works at a global scale with almost 80 percent more forestland under its cerification standard and 25 times as many operators in its value chain as SFI.
