Ecotrust Canada has over 10 years of experience working directly with First Nations communities to assist in various projects, including traditional knowledge mapping, capacity building and land use planning. We have provided support to communities by way of building tools for improving decision-making and information democracy.

Ecotrust Canada is seeking an Application Developer who is a highly motivated individual who thrives in a high-paced environment. We are becoming a leader in the development of open-source community support tools in BC, and are looking to expand our Knowledge Systems and Planning team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Application Developer is an integral role in defining and strengthening Ecotrust Canada’s use and deployment of customized applications to demonstrate and illustrate a conservation economy. This position is responsible for overseeing application development, including developing custom interfaces, stand-alone GIS applications, web-mapping applications, database models, and works with the Technical Solutions Coordinator and other staff to allocate these resources to projects based on priority needs.

The majority of the Application Developer’s time is focused on completing technical geospatial programming and analysis and provides technical support and guidance specific to programming needs, as required, to other GIS staff.

The Application Developer works closely with the Technical Solutions Coordinator to develop and implement stand-alone applications involving GIS-related components, and to more actively market and promote Ecotrust Canada’s GIS analyses and web-based tools.

Requirements:

• demonstrated breadth and strength of skills in programming and interactive mapping applications
• demonstrated application development experience; experience carrying out the full software development life cycle (including source code management and testing)
• experience with the following programming languages and web technologies:  JavaScript, Python, Perl, HTML, and CSS
• ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
• ability to work independently and as part of a team
• demonstrated ability to communicate with staff and clients
• desire and ability to maintain and build strong technical capacity within the organization
• commitment to the Ecotrust Canada mission of building a conservation economy
• exposure to PostGRES and PostGIS, familiarity with the geodatabase model
• experience with enterprise-level database providers (i.e. Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server)

Preferred Skills:

• commitment to developing and using open-source technology
• experience with Django, OpenLayers, jQuery
• knowledge of GIT or SVN source code management
• cross-platform and cross-browser application development
• developing and maintaining GIS web services including WMS and WFS
• experience with tools in the open source GIS software stack such as Quantum GIS, Grass, uDig, Mapserver/Geoserver, OGR/GDAL libraries, etc.
• experience with the ESRI GIS software stack including ArcGIS, ArcCatalog, ArcInfo, ArcSDE and ArcServer
• experience with geographic functionality in an RDBMS
• experience with project management including scoping, time estimation and budgeting
• track record with presenting and/or publishing results
