JANUARY 2002 – Timbre Tonewood, a client of Ecotrust Canada, has been named Forest Industry Company of the Year at the 2001 Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards. The announcement was made at a sold-out gala banquet, at the Tigh Na Mara Resort in Parksville.
The Vancouver Island Business Examiner coordinated the Island-wide event, sponsored by Grant Thornton LLP Chartered Accountants and Management Consultants, the Certified Management Accountants of B.C., Western Economic Diversification, Business Development Bank of Canada, Mid Island Science & Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC) and Dominion Information Services.
Timbre Tonewood, which produces guitar soundboards in the Parksville Industrial Park, saw production rise two and half times that of 2000, while 2001 revenue doubled.
"We have excellent staff morale,’ says owner David Lapeyrouse. "We received new bank financing, and attracted new major customers. The skill level of our staff has become very high."
Lapeyrouse notes the piece of wood that comprises the guitar sound board is the most important part of the instrument. "The quality of wood on the top of the guitar will determine the tonal quality of the guitar," he adds.
Timbre Tonewood has developed sources of high quality Tonewood logs from all over B.C. to produce the soundboards. The company currently manufactures 40,000 "guitar tops" per month, and supplies over 50 percent of the world market in guitar soundboards and split cedar billets for the production of soundboards.
"The company is the largest producer of solid wood soundboards in the world," Lapeyrouse adds. "It ships worldwide to over 20 countries, and shipments range in size from one to 36,000 tops."
Timbre Tonewood purchases some of the highest value logs in the province to produce some of the highest value wood products. Its highest grade wood is valued at $113,000 per mbf.
In 2001, the company expanded production from 700 to 2,000 units per day, and the staff has grown from 16 to 22. Timbre Tonewood also captured two of the biggest accounts in the marketplace and undertook hiring and training virtually all staff positions.
"Timbre Tonewood is recognized in the world marketplace as the leader in the industry," says Lapeyrouse. "The company has built this reputation based on the strength of its marketing and identifying and delivering consistently each individual customer requirement.
"Our high rate of production is based on our high skilled and efficient staff."
