Writer Ian Gill had an essay published in the Toronto Star Opinion page this weekend entitled “Who Will Protect the Land from Reckless Development”. You can read it here. In it Gill, past president of Ecotrust Canada, talks about social licence, politics and contentious resource projects in both Canada and Australia from a perspective that is both engaging and highly personal.
As described in a blog post (Hearings into impacts of Northern Gateway Pipeline begin, January 2012), Ecotrust Canada is not a lobby group and rarely takes positions on specific development proposals. In the case of the Northern Gateway proposal (a main character in Gill’s essay), we have offered our perspective in the blog post “The Enbridge Gateway Pipeline and the Conservation Economy“. Gill’s essay is another voice in the discussion, but does not represent the position of either Ecotrust or Ecotrust Canada.
