Position Summary 

Our summer intern working with the Indigenous Homelands Program will be based in Bella Coola, BC, to advance its housing governance projects with the Nuxalk Nation. We aim to break down barriers that prevent community members from being able to return to, and thrive in, their homelands. Our work tackles these issues holistically, and our projects range from housing to regional supply chain networks and innovative land tenure strategies.

Tasks

The Indigenous Homelands Intern will support our local community projects in a variety of ways, including supporting the development of Nuxalk Nation’s new holistic community housing strategy, research related to our Housing & Homelands Toolkit, assisting with the coordination of focus groups and community workshops, assisting with the design and dissemination of information for community members, and supporting with project administration.

As per the Canada Summer Jobs program, through which this position is being funded, the applicant must be (a) is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; (b) is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act [S.C. 2001, c. 27]*; and(c) is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Responsibilities, Activities, and Deliverables 

  • With your supervisor, create a work plan for the 8-week term to ensure projects are completed on time and meetings are scheduled to discuss performance and mentorship.
  • Assist in the development of the Nuxalk Nation Housing Strategy.
  • Support research related to our Housing and Homelands Toolkit.
  • Assist with the coordination of focus groups and community workshops.
  • Assist with the design and dissemination of information for community members.
  • Support with project administration.
  • Maintain a professional representation and be punctual, respectful, and curious.
  • Work closely with the Program Director (Ashli Akins), as well as other Indigenous Homelands Program staff, and the Nuxalk Nation’s Housing Department.
  • Other tasks as required.

Skills and Qualifications 

While we aim to hire an intern who has some of these basic skills, we will mentor them over the course of their internship in the following:

  • Collaboration
  • Communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Problem-solving and leadership skills
  • Digital skills (computer literacy – Excel, Word)
  • Basic graphic design skills
  • Workshop facilitation
  • Ability or willingness to work in Nuxalk Nation, Bella Coola, B.C.

Additionally, the theoretical frameworks that we will focus on include introductions to the following concepts:

  • Knowledge about Indigenous housing
  • Knowledge dissemination and democratization of open-access information
  • Land tenure
  • Rights and responsibilities related to housing and land
