This report is intended as an information guide for government, business, nonprofit groups and others interested in understanding how to engage the Nations of Hesquiaht, Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Yuu-tluth-aht (Ucluelet) and Toquaht.
Ecotrust Canada is not aware of any other information source that begins to make the governing structures of these five First Nations communities so readily accessible. We believe that the work is important to support respectful communications and effective multi-party decision-making within the region.
We encourage organizations, institutions, government agencies and businesses to refer to this report for guidance when they are considering their approach to consultation with these Nations. At the same time, nothing in the report is meant to define or diminish the Indigenous rights and titles of the First Nations; nor is it intended to be used in a court of law or in a treaty negotiation process.
Ecotrust Canada has learned a tremendous amount from the local First Nations researchers who helped to write this report and we are grateful for the lessons learned from our First Nations friends and colleagues. We learned that the governance structures in First Nations are not only alive and vibrant, but also that they have much to teach us.
