Laurel works as an Electronic Monitoring Video Analyst with the North Coast Area A crab fishery. Her background experience includes working on boats and onshore as a Fisheries Observer in the groundfish, salmon and herring fisheries. Prior to working as an observer, Laurel completed her honours degree in Marine Science and Management at the University of Queensland, Australia. Her research consisted of time-series analyses to examine changes in coral life-history strategies in response to climate change in the South Pacific.
After working alongside Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and temperate marine ecosystems, Laurel returned home to Canada to pursue her passion for marine conservation. Her long-term goal includes working alongside regional coastal communities to mitigate harmful environmental impacts and promote ecosystem resilience. Today, she lives in Prince Rupert where she enjoys small town life and loves getting out on the water to explore the beautiful surrounding islands and spectacular West Coast sunsets.
