Ecotrust Canada is looking to hire Dockside Monitors for the Council of the Haida Nations’ Community Based Fishery. Dockside Monitors can be based out of either Masset or Daajing Giids, the traditional territory of the Haida Nation.
We are looking to hire part-time staff available from mid-June to September, several days a week. The actual length of fisheries is determined through the season, and a set number of workdays is not guaranteed. Schedules are created monthly based on fishing activity.
Salary Range: $25/hour with a minimum 4 hour call out.

Our Community Fisheries program has been deeply rooted in community and solution-building in coastal B.C. for over 20 years. We envision resilient fisheries — fisheries that meet the immediate social and economic needs of adjacent communities without compromising ecological integrity or the ability of future generations to do the same.
Responsibilities include:
– Collection of accurate catch data
– Collection of biological samples
– Record legible and accurate data on multiple forms
– Maintain professional working relationships
Qualifications:
– Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
– Organizational skills
– Strong written and verbal communication skills
– Excellent teamwork skills
– Comfortable working on docks, fishing vessels, and handling fish
– Completion of a Criminal Record Check
– Does NOT hold a fisher’s registration card or certificate of accreditation
– Does NOT purchase fish to resell
– Is NOT an owner, operator, or employee of a business that catches, cultures, processes, or transports fish.
Potential Observers are required to successfully complete Ecotrust Canada’s dockside observer training program. The program teaches Observers about the fishery to be monitored, safety protocols, relevant laws, and monitoring procedures.
A mandatory training course is scheduled for early May. Successful applicants must attend and pass the training course.
