Clarissa Samson,
Socioeconomic Lead, Indigenous Homelands Program

Clarissa Samson is an economist committed to reimagining the role of economic, financial, governance systems in fostering regenerative and equitable futures. Her work critically examines how dominant models of growth and investment can be transformed to align with ecological realities and collective well-being. Clarissa is interested in bridging theory and practice to explore what it means to live within planetary boundaries while supporting just and thriving communities.

With a background in ecology, Clarissa works across disciplines to understand how societies can transition from extractive development toward regenerative systems of production, governance, and exchange. She brings experience in research, monitoring and evaluation, policy, and ecosystem-based land-use planning and project management. Her work engages the intersections of ecological restoration, socio-ecological governance, and systems-oriented economics—integrating both quantitative and qualitative methods to assess and design transformative policy and planning frameworks.

Clarissa has worked across consulting, government, and non-profit sectors, where she has contributed to initiatives that advance Indigenous land governance, equitable policy development, and community resilience. Clarissa holds a master’s degree in Ecological Economics, and continues to question what—and whom—our economies are designed to serve.

Clarissa is supporting the Indigenous Homelands Program team to explore how economy, social, cultural, and environmental values are intertwined and interdependent, while supporting partner communities better align economic goals and strategies with their values. She provides support with economic analyses and unpacking complex issues surrounding Indigenous homelands, land tenure, and housing; and build tools to increase financial literacy in rural and remote Indigenous communities.

Outside of work, Clarissa finds balance through time outdoors – surfing, going for long runs or hikes on the trails with her dog, Islay. She also loves to dance, finding joy and creativity in movement and rhythm.
