Jennifer Paton, Community Fisheries

Jen has worked in the fisheries monitoring industry for the past 15 years, starting off as an at sea observer with Archipelago Marine Research Ltd., where she grew her skills and knowledge to take on increasing responsibility, from Deployment Coordinator, to Training and Operations Assistant, to eventually overseeing all aspects of the At Sea Observer Program as Operations Manager.

In 2018, she relocated to Coast Ts’msyen Territories, Prince Rupert, BC, to take on a Project Manager role with the Ecotrust Canada Fisheries Monitoring Team, where she became immersed in the Ecotrust Canada mission and vision. During this time, she ran the Area A Crab Electronic Monitoring Program and managed and coordinated the training and monitoring programs for local First Nations and demonstration fisheries. Recently, Jen has enjoyed two seasons as a Set Line Survey Specialist with the International Pacific Halibut Commission on their annual Fishery Independent Set Line Survey. With her many years of working with First Nations, harvesters, industry leaders, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and technology partners, she has developed an understanding of fisheries management and monitoring that meets the needs of all parties. She is currently located on the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Territories, also known as Victoria, BC.
