High-quality forest carbon projects that are led by First Nations can be a path toward community land management and sustainable revenue. Communities should be equipped with the information needed to evaluate potential carbon projects, including creating their own project where the community is in control of all aspects of it or saying “no” to a project proposed by a third-party company that does not align with the community’s interest and values. This toolkit is meant to provide unbiased information to First Nations interested in learning more about what forest carbon offset projects are, what they mean for sovereignty, and what they mean for protecting intact forests and restoring forests degraded by logging.
