Position Summary

Sharing Ecotrust Canada’s work with our partners in Prince Rupert, on Coast Ts’msyen territory, requires strong visual storytelling. Through our collective work in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities, we are demonstrating that a better system is possible and achievable. This summer’s communications projects will involve capturing engaging videos and photos of our work, as well as editing and producing a final short video that can be shared on our digital platforms.

We are seeking a summer Communications Specialist who is creative, self-driven, digital savvy, highly organized, and can work independently. Ideally, this individual has been developing multimedia skills through schooling and/or has direct experience with videography, communications, digital marketing, or journalism.

As per the Canada Summer Jobs program, through which this position is being funded, the applicant must be (a) is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; (b) is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act [S.C. 2001, c. 27]*; and(c) is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

This position can be remote, or a combination of remote and working in our office. However, the photography and video work must take place in Prince Rupert, BC. The summer term is flexible, and we can negotiate hours and start and end dates as long as it adheres to the Canada Summer Jobs program’s requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce high-quality written, visual, and multimedia content, particularly photos and video, with provided captions.
  • Enhance the charity’s social media presence by creating and curating content that resonates with our audience, promotes engagement, and reflects our values.
  • Research communications trends, environmental issues, and relevant news to incorporate into the content strategy and keep Ecotrust Canada at the forefront of discussions.
  • Use Microsoft Office (Word/PowerPoint) and other creative digital platforms as needed.
  • Work closely with the Manager of Communications and Engagement.
  • Maintain a professional representation and be punctual, respectful, and curious.

Activities and Deliverables

  • Create a work plan for the 8-week term to ensure projects are completed on time and meetings are scheduled to discuss performance and mentorship.
  • Photograph our Community Fisheries, Food Systems, and Community Energy work in action. Edit and organize the photos into folders.
  • Produce at least one short video of one of our projects in Prince Rupert.
  • Research digital storytelling tools that will help expand and improve the charity’s communications with communities and donors. Present findings to the manager before the end of the work term.
  • Work with the Communications Manager and other team members within the organization to support program-specific storytelling.
  • Other tasks as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience using video and photo editing software, such as Adobe Creative Suite
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take the initiative and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of digital marketing tactics and social media use
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English
  • Demonstrated commitment to support resilient rural, remote, and Indigenous communities and a healthy environment through educational, professional, and/or volunteer experiences
  • Having photography/videography equipment is an asset
  • Ability or willingness to work in Prince Rupert, BC.
