Our fisheries team has a very welcome new addition: Amanda Barney joins us as Crab Electronic Monitoring Project Manager, based in our Skeena office.

Amanda, who grew up in Newfoundland, is no stranger to the importance of the ocean for the health and wealth of coastal communities. In fact, β€œIt was the effect of the fisheries collapse in 1997 on Old Bonavista, an outport just around the corner from a childhood summer home in Trinity Bay, which inspired me to go into fisheries work,” reveals Amanda. β€œI was in high school at the time and it really shook me, forever changing the landscape of the Newfoundland coast as it did.”

Building on her passion for fisheries, developed at such a young age, Amanda gained a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a Master’s degree in Marine Affairs from the University Of Washington. Her Master’s work focused on sustainable development in coastal communities, and on linking social issues with resource management and policy. She is especially interested in the social side of management and how to create useful dialogue between scientists, managers, policy makers and the public.

Amanda also brings to Ecotrust Canada 10 years’ experience working on both coasts of North America in fisheries management, oceanographic research, and in tourism development and research. She has spent time in laboratories, as an editor, and at-sea as both a scientist and a fisheries observer.

All of which makes Amanda the perfect fit for the work Ecotrust Canada is trying to do with BC’s coastal communities to build the conservation economy. We are committed to creating new, sustainable ways of doing business on our oceans to ensure long-time fishing communities can remain resilient and continue with their traditions, building healthy, wealthy fisheries for many years to come.

We are delighted to have Amanda on our team. Welcome.
