A loan to buy a new boat seemed almost as elusive as the sleek sockeye Tina Koller tried to net in the Fraser River in 2005.
“Fishing is a way of life for me and my family, and not having the proper equipment was proving to be a real safety hazard,” says Koller, a gillnet fisherman and Tsawwassen First Nation Councillor. “After trying several avenues to acquire financial support for a new fishing vessel, and after many rejections, there seemed to be little hope, until I discovered Ecotrust Canada Capital."
Ecotrust Canada Capital provided Koller with $20,200 by creatively structuring a loan. She bought a new aluminium gillnetter with a hydraulic drum and is now back in business catching salmon on the Fraser River.
“It's a beautiful working boat,” she says.
