Manager, Community Fisheries

Position status: Employee contract – salaried
Salary Range: $60,000-75,000 annually, depending on experience. Generous benefits package available after 3 months.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with experience and knowledge in fisheries, natural resource use and planning, and data collection, management, and analysis to join our community fisheries program team.

Ecotrust Canada’s fisheries and marine program has been deeply rooted in community and solution building in coastal BC for over 20 years. Our fisheries vision is for resilient fisheries; fisheries that meet the immediate social and economic needs of adjacent communities, without compromising ecological integrity, or the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

 

Position Overview

The Community Fisheries Manager will join the fisheries team in delivering on Ecotrust Canada’s fisheries initiative within EC’s current Strategic plan. The primary areas of responsibility are provided below. They will have a deep understanding of, and experience in, BC fisheries and coastal communities, and be an effective strategist and dynamic facilitator who can build strong relationships with and amongst diverse parties.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Planning and management of projects within the fisheries program, including but not limited to:
    • Fisheries research & policy
    • Social finance for fisheries
    • Community fisheries planning and licence bank development projects
    • Business planning (variety of fishery businesses)
  • Client/partner relationship building including acting as liaison with industry participants and organizations, ENGO’s, government representatives, and First Nations
  • Community information gathering through interviews and other data gathering in community
  • Report and proposal writing
  • Supporting program and project related fundraising
  • Convene industry and community workshop(s) as necessary
  • Project management

 

Desired Knowledge, Experience and Personal Attributes

  • Integrity and progressive principles and values, mission-driven and self-directed with passion for Ecotrust Canada’s vision and mission
  • Excellent inter­personal skills including multi-stakeholder engagement and process facilitation, partnership development, strong leadership, collaboration and negotiation skills.
  • Strong project management and administration skills, including
  • Workload management and planning
  • Use of project management software and other tools to track schedules, task management, timelines, resource utilization, budgeting, staff accountabilities, etc.,
  • Strong listening and interviewing skills; ability to hear the needs of others and frame opportunities around them; ability to summarize information and connect it to research and data analysis.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with:
    • Extensive familiarity with BC fisheries including management, harvesting methods, policy, and the broad diversity of interest groups.
    • Familiarity with applicable laws, policies and regulations in BC and federally related to marine planning and fisheries management
    • Personal commercial fishing experience
    • Direct knowledge of, and experience in, one or more BC coastal communities
    • Experience with community capacity building
    • Experience fundraising for non-profits including government and foundation sources
    • Experience working in diverse cultural contexts and with BC First Nations.

 

Qualifications

  • Post­secondary degree or equivalent work experience in relevant field e.g. natural resource planning, fisheries, CED, business, policy, sciences.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with education/training and work experience in:
    • Business administration related to project management
    • Community development
    • Research and consultation work in diverse cultural settings
  • Ability to work with communities, governments, NGO’s, industry, and academic partners to co-develop, implement, and deliver work.
  • Ability to work within a developing program; both independently, showing good judgement and initiative, and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbally, written and visual forms, ensuring the message is clear. Experience in writing detailed reports and summaries for a wide variety of audiences. Excellent presentation and public speaking skills across diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills including the ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects/deadlines; work well with deadlines.
  • Ability to travel and possession of a BC driver’s license
