What Lies Beneath

This guidebook, written by Ecotrust Canada Forester Doug Hopwood and published in March 2002, is intended to provide practical guidance to First Nations technicians, researchers and decision-makers working in the forestry sector.

The goal of the book is to provide an understanding of the key forest management issues that arise in reviewing Forest Development Plans and it outlines various strategies that may assist First Nations in responding to Forest Development Plans in ways that will promote the environmental, cultural and economic aims of their communities.

Throughout British Columbia, the forest industry operates on lands that are the traditional territories of First Nations. Because road-building and logging can have serious impacts on resources that are critical to their economic and cultural well-being, it is important for First Nations to influence the way forestry is practiced
